There are several transportation options available throughout the city:

MTR (Mass Transit Railway)

Hong Kong’s MTR is one of the most efficient and convenient railway systems in the world. It serves Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and Lantau Island, including the airport.

Buses

There are five major bus service providers in Hong Kong. Kowloon Motor Bus, New World First Bus, and Citybus operate across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. New Lantao Bus serves mainly Lantau Island, while Long Win Bus covers North Lantau and the airport area.

Trams

Hong Kong’s iconic double-decker trams run along the northern corridor of Hong Kong Island, passing through neighborhoods like Western District, Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay, and North Point. This is one of the city’s most scenic and affordable transport options.

Taxis

Taxis in Hong Kong are color-coded according to the areas they serve:

  • Red taxis: Operate throughout most of Hong Kong, except for Tung Chung Road and the south side of Lantau Island.

  • Green taxis: Serve only the New Territories.

  • Blue taxis: Serve only Lantau Island.

All taxis can travel to and from Hong Kong International Airport.

Uber

Uber also operates in Hong Kong and provides convenient app-based ride services. You can download the app on iOS or Android: https://www.uber.com/fr/fr/download/

Octopus Card

To access most public transportation options, we highly recommend using the Octopus Card:

The Octopus Card is a prepaid, contactless smart card that allows you to easily pay for metro (MTR), buses, trams, ferries, and even some taxis. It is also widely accepted in convenience stores, supermarkets, vending machines, restaurants, and more.

Where to get one?

You can purchase a Sold Tourist Octopus (preloaded tourist card) or an On-Loan Octopus (card with refundable deposit) at:

  • Hong Kong International Airport counters

  • MTR stations

  • 7-Eleven, Circle K, and other convenience stores

  • Online: Octopus for Tourists

How to use it?

  • Top up your card at MTR stations, convenience stores, or automatic top-up machines.

  • Tap your card on the reader when entering and exiting transportation.

  • The fare is automatically deducted from your card balance.

You can also monitor your balance and transaction history using the Octopus App for Tourists, available on iOS and Android.

Important: Most top-up locations only accept cash (HKD). We recommend withdrawing Hong Kong dollars upon arrival to ensure you can easily recharge your card during your stay.
